Newborn baby skin care is big business these days, with any number of products claiming to be must-haves. However, you might be surprised to learn that many doctors think these baby skin care products might actually be detrimental to your newborn. This is because of the chemicals that some of them contain.
You want to avoid exposing your baby to chemicals as long as possible. Leave your baby's skin to develop unimpeded. Allergies, eczema, and other irritations are less likely to occur this way.
Basic skin care is generally enough for your baby. For the first month, keep your baby safe from any type of product containing chemicals. In your baby's first month all that's necessary for bathing is some warm water and a soft cloth. If your baby has thick hair, you can use a baby comb to clean it while bathing.
Nature Knows Best
Natural is the best way to go when approaching baby skin care. To follow a natural skin care routine, leave your baby's skin untreated as much as you can.
When your baby is born you may notice a white substance on your baby's skin that is sticky in texture. Don't remove it, because it's a natural skin moisturizer. It should be allowed to penetrate the skin on its own.
If your baby is premature then it is even more important that you hold back on using any baby care products. The reason for this is that preemies have even more fragile skin than a full term baby. The best time to start skin care for your premature baby is after the exact due date of your baby.
Keeping the Cord Clean
Until the cord falls off, it's important that you keep the area clean and dry. There is no need to use any powders or lotions on it. If the area gets dirty simply use a soft cloth and water to wipe it clean before patting dry.
If your baby is premature or sick then the skin care routine you should follow for keeping the cord clean may be different. You might require the use of an antiseptic to keep infection at bay. Ask your doctor for advice when it comes to skin care for your premature or sick baby.
Start using baby wipes only after your baby is a month old. Make sure that the baby wipes you use are free of alcohol and fragrances. Get the mildest ones you can find. Emollient based moisturizers are the best for your newborn.
